herfection: What’s up Rik?
Rik Cordero: Did you like the vid [Blue Magic Trailer – Jay-Z]?
herfection: Yes I did, did you come up with the idea?
Rik Cordero: Yeah, I wrote the treatment like two hours before we shot.
herfection: Wow, what did Jay have to say?
Rik Cordero : He loved it, it was crazy. It was a crazy day. I wrote about it on the Three/21 site. A lot of things are in motion right now because of that video. And he wasn’t even in it! At the studio he said it would distract from the storyline if he made an appearance.
herfection: Yeah I see, fast pace.
Rik Cordero : Yeah it all happened very quickly and I need to rest. We just shot Smif N Wessun [Gotta Say It] today too. But I love it. I guess you can't really prepare yourself for something like that. You just have to be ready 24-7 and that’s why I love shooting.
herfection: Did you know after shooting the Memphis Bleek [Get Ya Money Up] video that Jay would want you to do a trailer?
Rik Cordero : Nah [laughs]. I find out about these things like the day before. I had no idea he had seen any of my previous work yet the first thing he said to me was “I see you getting your name out there!” I guess with the amount of shooting we do even the big dudes are bound to come across it.
herfection: That’s great. Jay-Z!
Rik Cordero : I know right! Hova. Big Brother. God of the Game. Watching him that day in the studio, you can tell that he’s having fun with the music by releasing a concept album based on a big Oscar contending movie. The song we shot the trailer for is called Blue Magic, which is a reference to the product that Denzel’s character [Frank Lucas] pushes. You can’t lose with that powerhouse combination of two legends at the top of their game.
herfection: How did you get that project?
Rik Cordero : Well my manager is connected to Def Jam so for the past few months I was introduced to most of the marketing and promo staff. So every time we’d shoot a video, I’d come to the offices and show everyone. I established a relationship with the staff so when the opportunity came up I was already on the radar. They’ve seen firsthand what I can do with minimal resources and have been supportive of me ever since. It’s amazing.
herfection: Oh wow.
Rik Cordero : I mean I've only been at it for a few months.
herfection: Directing videos?
Rik Cordero : Well indie Hip-Hop vids. I’ve been shooting since 2004. Just flying under the radar and playing my position as the underdog’s underdog. I think it’s a perfect opportunity right now because it’s like the wild west for indie music vids. I've been practicing how to create in those conditions for so long yet the opportunities are just arriving now. I mean back then I was just shooting anything and everything. It’s a little different with management now because of scheduling. Also the shoots have become strategic [like positioning me and Three/21 as a brand]. But I'll always have that independent spirit no matter what.
herfection: Yeah, so tell me what inspired directing.
Rik Cordero : Well it began when I was real young. I did the home movie thing and throughout high school and college I made shorts films and music videos with my friends. After college, I was able to pull my resources together, from gear to meeting talent. That gave me the confidence to begin the treatment for my first major project, an indie feature called Mend. I wrote it after a close friend committed suicide and that movie would be the exact point that inspired my work now. I love to explore the human condition and when you strip away a lot of the stylistic choices in the videos you'll find some pure emotion in there. A real behavior that isn't demanded but mutually discovered. I love when that happens.
herfection: I understand.
Rik Cordero : My job as a director is to setup the ideal conditions for my artists to react to and feel. That’s it. There’s no mystery to it, it’s just my process.
herfection: So every director has a different method.
Rik Cordero : Yes they do. Sometimes I’m criticized as passive but again that’s just my method. I make very calculated decisions every second and it’s never really fully realized until the end product. Some of it is from the intense multitasking that's involved. It's like I communicate all of it to myself while on set. I've always been very resourceful and technical so I was confident in that sense. However I've learned over the years that it’s only one of the many hats the director has to wear during a shoot. Like communicating, discovering and rehearsing with actors and musicians. I read somewhere that the glamour of directing is walking around half asleep feeling like your head is about to explode. That’s not too far from the truth. But it’s a lot of fun as well.
herfection: [Laughs] Wow, describe indie videos to me.
Rik Cordero : Production wise, indie vids usually mean low or no budgets. As an artist I have a tremendous amount of guilt that my cast and crew are sacrificing their time and energy for something that I believe in with not much money involved. So when I first started I tried to fight the need to be liked and appreciated and instead focus on the big picture. What's this story really about? Does this make sense? Eventually my crew and I developed a psychic relationship so whenever we run into problems we'd band together and come up with creative solutions to solve them since there was no money to throw around. That in a nutshell is why I love indie videos. Because it’s a group effort and when everyone believes in the big picture, it’s magic. I embrace adversity and turn it into an opportunity to experiment and be creative.
herfection: And without throwing away money.
Rik Cordero : Yeah because you really can't.
herfection: You've learned how to manage.

Rik Cordero : Whether I’m crewed up with 20 heads or it’s me and a camera I’m gonna get it in. And it'll all happen for a reason. On every shoot I will do the best I can in a short amount of time.
herfection: Do you have a motto?
Rik Cordero : My motto is ALWAYS STAY INSPIRED. That’s the difference in everything you do. Whether it’s shooting a video or baking a cake, stay inspired! There will always be compromises, but if you tried your best then it will show. There are a few young directors out here that I talk to every week. I urge them to always shoot and experiment. I point out the positives and let them know that I feel what they're doing. For a long time I was always told I had to be an asshole, or that I was selling myself short and it got me down all the time. The moment I stopped thinking like that is when I started getting more work. You know sometimes it can be the ones closest to you who will bring you down. But you really have to love the shit to understand. You have to be in the trenches and exhausted yet feel like this is the only place you’d rather be. So that’s how you know where I’m coming from and if I can inspire other artists in some little way that means so much more than any amount of money. Success to me is less about budgets and more about how successful you can make yourself to others.
herfection: That’s love. So let’s refer back to that article you sent me last week.
Rik Cordero : Okay, well the article is about the incredible shrinking music video budget and the writer seems to embrace the feeling of like a new movement.
herfection: Yeah?
Rik Cordero : For the most part it's art for the sake of art you know. I’ll give you a first hand example. One of my favorite artists that I enjoy working with is Joell Ortiz. He's the sort of artist that you wish you work with everyday. Very intelligent, open and creative. I remember his manager Mike reaching out to me a long time ago before his album dropped. Mike came across my videos for my boy James Watts on MySpace and loved them. I think we had just finished Wish You Were Here and James really let me do my thing, he's another one of my favorites.
herfection: Yeah, James said and I quote "I’d bet the farm on that guy [laughs]".
Rik Cordero : Yeah same here [laughs]. You know real recognize real and I clicked with Joell just like James, very instant. When you match confident, secure artists who just want to make art, that’s when things seem to work. So anyway, for a few months Mike never followed up with me. I thought either they found another director or they just didn't have any plans for a video. Then I heard "Hip Hop" on the radio and I remember calling Mike like “I heard the new song and I wanna do it!” He said “Oh damn we just shot that.” And you know my heart sank a little because hearing Hip Hop on the radio was refreshing. This dude saying “I ain’t trying to bring New York back I’m a breath of fresh air, that good old New York rap”, like WTF! That blew my mind. So anyway, we agreed to do something else and that’s how "Brooklyn Bullshit" came about. We set out to make the video without waiting for the label.
herfection: Oh, Koch Records.
Rik Cordero : The album, The Brick: Bodega Chronicles was about to drop through Koch and he needed a new video to promote it. So long story short we shot and edited Brooklyn Bullshit two days before the album dropped. We released the video on Tuesday and that week was tremendous for Joell.
herfection: Wow, only two days?
Rik Cordero : Yep, we got it in.
herfection: You’re good.
Rik Cordero : We got all the shots because his management was great. Shout out to Mike Heron and Dennis Wynn. Those guys are beasts. Now here's where things get interesting. What was intended as a straight to YouTube video became a broadcast, label serviced video when it premiered on BET's Rap City like 2 months ago. That moment made me realize that there was something to this guerilla, renegade, by any means necessary form of shooting. Videos are art to me more than a work for hire project and I pushed to create art. That's it. And when it's done for the right reasons it will be seen, by any means necessary. That video got me a decent amount of exposure which I've parlayed into more shooting work.
herfection: How long did it take you and him to make Latino?
Rik Cordero : A day. I usually do one day shoots because it makes sense on this indie level.
herfection: I can only imagine that if you had more money and more than a day or two what you could come up. Would things be that much different?

Rik Cordero : Well at the end of the day these are just videos. I’m up for anything but I’m not gonna jump out the window for no reason. A bigger budget will allow me to take care of my crew. That’s first and foremost. I don’t need all that extra shit. I remember this one dude who wanted a video saying that only good videos are made with six cameras. I was like WTF. The cam is just a tool, it’s the idea that counts. I’m always learning something new during each shoot so the techniques have become archived into a mental toolbox which is far more valuable.
herfection: Back to budgets, can you speak on it?
Rik Cordero : What are you working with [laughs]? That's pretty much how I can summarize budgets because every project is different. I will still do the best with whatever I’m working with.
herfection: You're the founder of Three/21 Films, tell us what that’s about.
Rik Cordero : Three/21 films was launched in 1999 and was created with a mission to produce innovative music videos, documentaries, shorts and narrative features by any means necessary. With little regard for formal training, permits or rules, we instead focus on unique and non-traditional solutions for any given situation. My partner Nancy Mitchell and I brought it to another level after Mend. When Steve Carless, my manager came on board, the music video thing took off.
herfection: Are you happy with where y’all are right now?
Rik Cordero : I think we are making the right moves but there is still a long way to ago. But we're having fun every shoot, learning, growing and creating art. I want Three/21 to be like the Swiss Army knife for film production, adaptable to any situation like the A-Team. If you have a project, if no one else can help, and if you can find them, maybe you can hire, Three/21 Films.
herfection: What else can Rik Cordero be called besides a director? You're a writer as well and...
Rik Cordero : I’m a jack of all trades and master of none. I’m all around so to speak. Like you know in those video games where you can choose strengths like speed, power, jumping, etc.? I'd be like 50% for each category. Put it this way, filmmaking is an education in photography, lighting, audio, electricity, acting, editing, psychology, social skills, organization, etc.
herfection: A lot.
Rik Cordero : Yep, so I have to give each category equal attention. Plus I remain modest and try not to feed into the sometimes explosive tension that can occur on set. Unless there is a safety issue then I'll get upset.
herfection: Yeah you seem level headed and concerned with your crew as well.
Rik Cordero : Well without them I’m a hack. Plus being modest keeps you grounded and likeable in many circles which is essential for indie videos especially in this Hip Hop game. I’m pretty disarming and physically unassuming. It's no secret that I get plenty of hookups, work and contributions because of this.
herfection: Awards.
Rik Cordero : Awards are nice but can sometimes be political, depending on the festival.
herfection: You've won a few, what were they for?
Rik Cordero : One was for Park, Park, my first music video which was about direct to consumer drug advertising and the other was I've Been Lost for the band +/-. Both were pivotal moments in my life.
herfection: What's your favorite thing to do? I know of a few music videos you've done but not much of your other work. Do you enjoy music videos the most?

Rik Cordero : We got some more album joints from Consequence [cop that Don't Quit Your Day Job in stores now]. Quence is another one of my favorite artists. We became good friends based on our creative ideas. We're both more interested in putting out great work rather than waiting. He's one of the most diligent artists out there and the new videos are fresh.
herfection: Yeah, I'm ready to see more. So what's the next project you have going on?
Rik Cordero : Well I don’t like to talk about future projects until they're in the can [laughs]. It’s like so many pop up and you're ready to roll then something comes up that postpones it. That’s happened multiple times but it's the nature of the game. Same thing with the treatments. I'm constantly writing them and not all of them will make it. But it increases the chances of getting a project and allows me to recycle ideas that get rejected. I guess hit the Three/21 site to see what we're up to.

Rik Cordero : Memphis is in the can we're waiting for a couple of revisions from Young Guru. It’s a song called Get Ya Money Up produced by Cool and Dre from Miami. We have cameos from Tru Life, Beanie Siegel, Young Gunz and Uncle Murda. We shot it a few weeks ago in Atlantic City at the 40/40 club. And like I mentioned earlier, we just shot Smif N Wessun Gotta Say It too. I’m a pretty big fan of the Duck Down squad. Black Moon's Enta Da Stage is a classic album ingrained in my memory and it's inspirational to see those cats still doing it. Totally indie and still moving units. Shout out to Dru Ha and Noha. We also got an indie feature in development. It’s called Inside A Change and it’s about a young man, sentenced to prison, who goes home for his last day of freedom to throw a birthday party for his mother while trying to bring his two brothers together to be a family. It’s like the 25th Hour but told from a young man's perspective.
